DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

 
 
 
Welcome to the homepage of the Victorian Ice Hockey Development Council. The V.I.H.D.C. is a program designed for beginners to learn to play ice hockey and acquire the games' basic skills in an enjoyable structured environment. It enables participants to become contributing members of a team, it develops self confidence and sense of personal achievement. The V.I.H.D.C. realises the necessity of introducing youngsters to ice hockey in a responsible and controlled manner, and has adopted the Initiation Program as its foundation for its structure.
 
The established objectives are as follows:-
  • To learn the basic skills required to play the game of ice hockey 
  • To develop an understanding of basic team work through participation in instructed activities and adapted game like situations 
  • To have fun while enjoying ice hockey and physical activity 
  • To refine basic motor patterns
  • To be introduced to concepts of co-operative play and sportsmanship 
 

2004 Season Programme
Students will be taught the correct fitting of their skates, skating stance and balance.

Skating 

  • T-Push and stride 
  • Correct balance and control while skating 
  • Glide turns on both inside and outside edges 
  • Control stopping 
  • Crossover skating 
  • Skating with head up

Stick Handling 

  • Stationary puck handling 
  • Open ice carry  i.e. skating while puck handling 
  • Passing exercises both forehand and backhand 
  • Receiving pass both forehand and backhand 
To receive the 'A' level badge, the student will be assessed on Skating and Stick Handling ability
 
 Power Skating
  • Front start (Acceleration) 
  • Crossover pumping 
  • Tight turns 
Stopping on both skate edges The above must be performed both forwards and backwards
 

Stick Control while Skating 

  • Puckhandling around objects 
  • Stopping and starting while controlling a puck 
  • Lead pass to moving target
  • Shooting the puck both forehand and backhand

 
To Receive the 'B' level badge the student will be assessed on  Power Skating and Stick Control while Skating.

Level 'B' students will also be educated in;

  • game situations
  • player positioning
  • basic defense and attack
  • player discipline 
Skating requires many hours of practice

 2007 Season Information 
The IHV Development Council is run on Tuesdays from 5.30pm - 7.00pm and commencing 6th February at:- 
Olympic Ice Skating Centre,
1080 Centre Road, South Oakleigh, Victoria.
 


$16.00 per week and $53.50(under 18 yrs) or $63.00(over 18 yrs) annual insurance and Australian Ice Hockey Federation fee playable within 6 weeks of commencement date. 


Cost includes, coaching, use of hire skates, hockey helmet and hockey stick. 
If you are interested in being a Goalkeeper, equipment is available for use.

The Development Council intends to offer specific 'Camps' for existing player development also. The recent Goalie school was well attended and the kids all learnt a lot. Successful Checking and Game Strategies are on the agenda for later in the season.... watch this space for news.
 
NEWS
 
A series of 1 hour Checking Camps for Junior B and Junior A players will be held on Sunday mornings the following dates:
 
4th, 11th, 18th March 2007 commencing 6.45am on the ice.
